When I started travelling sustainability wasn’t a topic like nowadays. More recently more and more people start asking me the question how sustainability relates to my “flying behavior”. This made me rethink some things lately. Since 2019 I compensate the CO2 emissions of all my flights. I also really like KLM’s Fly Responsibly initiative. Also, due to Covid-19 I started to explore more in my own country, by train and bike! More on these stories coming soon!
KLM’s Fly Responsibly campaign
Ultimately I think it is up to the government, and especially the EU, to really tackle the environmental issues related to flying. I don’t mind paying a bit more in the form of a tax, especially for short distanced flights in order to compensate the environmental effects of flying. But I think the problem is more structural, the fact that it soon (fall 2020) will be possible to take a direct hi-speed train from Amsterdam to London (one of the busiest flight routes in Europe) says enough. We forgot to invest in a good and reliable, but most importantly affordable, infrastructure for decades.
